Our interactive school workshops are increasingly being booked by Pupil Premium administrators as external specialised support to the English department, to raise achievement and improve outcomes for disadvantaged pupils.
We work with students of all abilities and have received some outstanding testimonials on the impact our school workshop has had on pupil attainment. A day learning about being a reporter goes some way to closing the gap between the less literate pupils and their peers. In small groups, we are able to offer one-to-one teaching and support which is hugely beneficial to these young people.
One Year 7 student at Heyford Free School had reading and writing difficulties and been receiving one-to-one attention for the whole year. He received an award for Excellent Article Writing at the end of the journalism school workshop, reducing his teacher to tears of pride. The lovely thing was, we didn’t know anything about his past and had quite genuinely picked out his article as a superb example to read out to the class!
I thought it was really fun because it was like I was a real reporter and then when I grow up I will have some skills that I can use.
Summer School | Enrichment Days
Why not book a Journalism for Schools workshop for an educational, fun-filled interactive day for Summer School or enrichment/collapsed timetable days?
A summer writing workshop is an activity which can complement and evolve classroom-based work and is designed to promote independent learning and thinking, encourage enquiring minds and broaden students’ knowledge.
The activities can take place in or out of the classroom and the workshop can be one from our standard programme or specially designed to suit the school or organisation.
We regularly work with international students who gain valuable language and communication skills from a workshop, whilst loving the traditional aspects of learning about British journalism compared to their own media back home.
A TEFL qualification is also a valuable addition to our skillset. This i-to-i course has taught us about the possible challenges of teaching young people where English is not their first language. We have learned to predict what problems there may be in speech and understanding and how to overcome them.
